Computers
Give a folk a computer
Pick the right desktop or isolated environment.
A folk can work with no computer, use the machine running OpenFolks, or sit inside an isolated desktop.
| Backend | Isolation | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| This computer | None | Local apps and files you explicitly approve |
| Local VM | Containerized desktop | Repeatable browser and desktop work on this machine |
| Box cloud computer | Hosted remote desktop | Always-on isolated Linux |
| Self-hosted VPS | Hardened container over SSH | Infrastructure you own |
Auto, local, and cloud
Selection is explicit per folk. Auto may reuse a ready, verified backend. It does not silently provision every backend or turn on host control.
Preview and takeover
The Computer panel can show live frames while a folk works. Supported cloud desktops also offer an interactive viewer. OpenFolks opens that viewer in the app when it can, with a browser fallback for external join flows.
Preview is not permission
Starting a screen preview does not grant control. Local input needs a separate opt-in and stays inside the computer-use safety boundary.
