macOS Gatekeeper
OpenFolks is not signed with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS may say the app is damaged or from an unidentified developer. After dragging it to Applications, run xattr -cr /Applications/OpenFolks.app, or right-click the app → Open → Open.
Windows SmartScreen
The Windows installer is not code-signed yet. Windows may show “Unknown publisher.” Confirm the file came from the official OpenFolks releases repository, then More info → Run anyway.
OpenFolks is MIT licensed.
Install an engine
The Desk launches agent CLIs you already have. Claude and Codex are the usual first pair.
- Install the CLI from its provider.
- Run it once in a terminal and finish sign-in.
- Restart OpenFolks.
- Open the model picker. Ready engines appear; missing ones say what to do next.
See Engines for the full list and path overrides.
Build from source
Need Node.js 24+, pnpm 10.33.0, and at least one signed-in engine CLI.
git clone http://github.com/manasdutta04/openfolks.git
cd openfolks
corepack enable
pnpm install --frozen-lockfileThree terminals:
pnpm dev:server
pnpm dev
pnpm dev:desktopWhere data lives
Application data is ~/.openfolks. Electron window and browser data use the normal per-platform app-data directory. Override the data root with OPENFOLKS_DATA_DIR.
